I would like to design a book for you.

I would like to design a book for you.

Seriously. Books are my favorite. Suddenly, last week, I realized that I could combine my loves: reading books, writing, design, long-form narrative, content brainstorming, information organization, photographs, printing, and paper into a new career.

Lightbulb! I could design books! I've even designed books before, most notably, my own (shameless plug).

The books in the photo above are two I designed for corporate clients: LPL Financial and Microsoft.

Heroes Happen Here is a coffee table book featuring stories and photographs of humans who use Microsoft Server products to do amazing things. From a amputee in Vietnam who started a non-profit determined to change the way the Vietnamese see the disabled to a woman in Germany who used Microsoft Server products to list and find missing children, Hereos Happen Here was distributed world-wide in 2008 to celebrate the launch of the 2008 server products.

The smaller book, titled Invest in Others, was an event premium created for LPL Financial that highlights LPL Financial advisors across the country who give back to their communities. The book follows my favorite photographer, Carolyn Jones, as she tours the United States in a motor home and photographs and interviews the subjects of the book.

My own book design came about because I just couldn't "see" my book as a linear document in Word. I'm a visual person. For example, we taped each page of Heroes Happen Here on an entire wall of the studio so we could literally visualize the book as a whole. My book was alternatively a dining room table full of sticky notes, piles of chapters spread across a bed, and then finally, a designed layout that I printed using Blurb.

Email me. Let's talk books.
