Capabilities, Highlights, Clients, Oh my!
Oh, the work. Werk. Work. Wyrk. Here's a description of my trade. Also known as a resume. That picture above is a pile of stuff I designed. It fell out of a box and compelled me to add it to this web site. If you'd like to see the work in person, I can haul it over to you. Or you can come over, I'll make you an espresso, matcha, or cup of tea and we can chat about all things created. You can also scroll though my digital, somewhat complete, portfolio. Also, there’s a little bio here.
------- Capabilities, Highlights, Clients, Oh My! ----------------------
Capabilities: Advertising, branding, identity, copywriting, design, and marketing strategy. This includes creating logos, brochures, stationery systems, book covers, book insides, package design, presentation materials, small-run publications, print and online advertising, invitations, trade show graphics and booth design, signage, event collateral, and brand standards guides. Also: creative brainstorming and name development, photography, digital retouching, illustration, project management, content management, print production, press checks, user interface, technology consultation, and web development.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS BY PROJECT: In no particular order.
Microsoft Server Launch, Heroes Happen Here Book: After helping to create the pitch that won the business for this important product launch for Microsoft, my team designed and produced a coffee table book for the launch featuring the stories and portraits of 115 different Microsoft Heroes. The book (174 pages with 10 different dust jackets) contains stories translated into 19 different languages. 37,000 copies were distributed at launch events around the world. The event and the book were the winner of the 2008 EIBTM Global award for Best Product Launch for Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008.
Regional Journal Launches, 1994 - 1996: Managed and created all marketing materials for the launches and subsequent promotion of four regional editions of The Wall Street Journal: Florida Journal, Southeast Journal, Texas Journal and The Wall Street Journal California.
The Infinite Timeline: Concepted, mocked-up, presented, and sold the idea of a Lab for Computer Sciences (LCS) Interactive Timeline to exist in the infinite corridor on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus during the LCS’s 25thAnniversary Celebration. In typical MIT fashion, the idea, once approved by then-director Michael Dertouzos, was over-analyzed, dissected, and cancelled due to probable and costly hacks by the highly educated and mischievous student body. Instead we produced a beautiful event launching the Frank Gehry-designed building which featured Bill Gates and Michael Dertouzos playing piano together.
Internet Explorer 4 Launch: Concepted and designed all launch materials for this newsworthy event at the beginning of the Internet Age. Giant “e” logo sets, Brazil-esque computer terminals, cereal bars, and metal invitations combined to impress 3,000 Microsofties, partners, press, industry, and analysts. Strange sidebar: I killed flies for Bill G.
freshbait, a creative company: Founded and lead a business just in time for the end of the dot com boom and the beginning of the decline of the US economy (take 1: 2000) that, nonetheless, ended up thriving over the subsequent five years amid the carnage of design and advertising firms in the Bay Area. Yes, people have heard of freshbait. They may not remember why, but is that important? Freshbait still lives at www.freshbait.com
VirtuaLit: Worked closely with Bedford St. Martins, a large publisher of liberal arts texts, to develop and design an award-winning interactive literature tutorial. The site won 2003 Technology Product Design Competition: “Best Design Winner” and “Best Operation Winner” for Rhetoric, Literature, and Writing. Unfortunately, like many web sites produced before five years ago, it doesn't exist anymore except for in a photoshop file on my archived drive.
Asheville School: We won the business with the support of the students of this boarding school (they voted our design comps the winner) then ran with the project creating (creative direction, copywriting, photography, design, production and printing) 13 separate brochures/books—each with it’s own distinct target market and purpose—in four months. The materials won several awards for higher-education marketing including the 2004 CASE - Council for Advancement and Support of Education: Best Student Recruitment Publication Package (out of all entries) - Gold Medal: North America (Asheville School Admissions Materials).
Gail & Rice: Turned an 80-year-old “non-brand” with a “reliable reputation” into a credible, professional industry leader after a complete brand overhaul.
Westwood Winery: Headed a complete branding effort for this small producer of very fine Pinot Noirs and Syrahs. We also designed the interior of the winery’s tasting room on the square in Sonoma.
LPL Financial: With Opts Ideas, created and implemented the branding strategy for LPL Financial's three yearly conferences — Masters, Summit and Focus — for nine years (2006 - 2014).
