HOLY MOTHER OF ART PROJECTS

I’m not going to say I’m done because I know how that goes (Universe, cover your ears). However, I will say that the book is done and available for ordering right this very minute starting now!

I have so many feelings. I have so many feelings that I’m pretty much feeling NOTHING. Perhaps this is shock. Maybe I’m stuck in a surreal alternate dimension where I could literally write a book, edit it, edit again, design the book, art direct the cover, shoot the cover (with me on it), package it all up in a digital file, get some proofs made, REDO it all a couple of times, and then upload it to a web site that will make and send a book to you. ALL BY MYSELF (with the help from all of the people on the three pages of “thank yous” at the end of the book). Wait, no, this is real life.

I did it. Back at the end of November, 2009 — TEN YEARS AGO — I slammed my laptop shut on 30 days of writing the very first draft of Mostly, I Just Miss My Nipples (as yet untitled) and went for a walk. I could not stop grinning. Laugh out loud face grinning with all of my body, walking around the Silver Lake reservoir like a crazy person. GRINNING.

What is it I’ve done over the last ten years — much of it in the last two? It is, simply, self-published a book. But Mostly, I Just Miss My Nipples is much more than that. It’s also a very personal art project that challenged everything I ever thought I knew how to do: write, edit, design, art direct, produce, program, web design, market, and follow-through on a concept that doesn’t involve a client, an editor, an agent, or a publisher. No one, but myself, was the boss of me and this project. It’s a LOT personal. Sometimes I think it’s too much ME and a tad outspoken. My 40-year-old self wrote this book for my 36-year-old breast cancer battling self and no one else. My nearly 50-year-old self is now ready to let it go.
